An ancient Italian specialty, dating back as far as the 13th century. Panforte originated from Siena in Italy’s picturesque Tuscan region and is also known as Siena Cake. There are references to the Crusaders carrying Panforte on their quests due to its long life and durability. There are also documents from 1205 which tell how Panforte was paid to monks and nuns as a form of tax or tithe from local inhabitants of the monastery. Panforte's success soon crossed the boundaries of Siena and many documents record its presence on the "menus" of the feasts of rich noble men in every part of Italy. Panforte literally translates to ‘strong bread’ which actually refers to the intense flavour and blend of spices, cocoa, nuts and honey. Today it is a Christmas festive delicacy shared with family and friends but also eaten throughout the year.
Panforte is best enjoyed at room temperature, cut into wafer thin slices and served with espresso or dessert wine after a meal.
Panforte will keep for many months either in an airtight container in a cool, dark place or in the refrigerator. Once refrigerated, please store back in same conditions, but we bet it won’t last that long – it’s too delicious!
We know you’ll enjoy this traditional Sienese slice of heaven… Buon appetito!
